(UP)HOLDING

April 12 - 15 2023

Dancehouse presents the Melbourne premiere of Tra Mi’s work (UP)HOLDING as part of Dancehouse’s Season 1 Program. Purchase tickets HERE

Stuck in a loop, (UP)HOLDING questions the morality of endurance in this endless marathon of existence…and performance.

A high-energy work for 3, (UP)HOLDING is a dance that struggles to endure itself. Inspired by the gruelling ‘dance marathons’ of America’s Depression Era, the show toys with acts of endurance and performance. Our role as viewer is challenged as we witness the ridiculous/unrelenting marathon of life alongside the performers. Looping over and over, the work exists in a flux of repetition and desperation as the performers surge through a complex choreography; juggling ceaseless movements with an increasing sense of urgency…enduring, struggling and performing their way towards clarity and resolution.

PAST WORK

The ___

Presented by Dancehouse, the Keir Foundation, Australia Council for the Arts, and Carriageworks.

By Tra Mi Dinh as part of the 2022 Keir Choreographic Award

The ___ explores the duality and complexity of endings in a duet caught between harsh and slippery edges. Two dancers oscillate through shifting scenes that challenge the finality of “endings” and what it means for something to come to a close. In their attempts to navigate the interchanging framework that shapes each experience against the next, multiple timelines converge to show that while some endings are final, others linger.

HOLDING

Premiered at March Dance 2021 on 12th and 13th March at Woodburn Creatives

HOLDING is a dance work that examines how people deal with waiting – the kind of waiting that’s forced upon you. When subjected to an unrelenting, repetitive structure people often hold on to unnecessary tension. It’s this tension that can send us into disarray – where do we hold it? Where should we place it? How do we expel it?

Initially developed thanks to Tasdance On the Island Residency, guided by Adam Wheeler.

Creative team:

  • Sound by Robert Downie

  • Production/Graphic Design by Andrew Fraser

  • Voiceover by Barton Welch
